History

Culpeper Schools Foundation was started by concerned citizens to help support Culpeper County Public Schools. In July 2003, Culpeper Schools Foundation (CSF) received its charter as a 501(c)(3) corporation and identified areas of funding needs within the schools. A press release and a letter to go home with each student announced the purpose of CSF to raise funds for Culpeper County Schools. Fund raising would be by individual membership and business/industry/government sponsorship and fund-raising events.

Fundraising events were planned and Cow Pie Bingo was held at the Bull Run Hunt Club in May 2004 and again in May 2005.

An anonymous donor enabled CSF to award two $500 scholarships to students writing on the theme “You Are Not Forgotten”. During a ceremony at Floyd T. Binns on April 21st 2004, to commemorate the resolution to fly the P.O.W./M.I.A. flag over all County buildings, Superintendent Dr. David Cox, presented CCHS Senior, Dawn Jenkins and CCHS Freshman, Allison McLaughlin, each with a $500 check from the Foundation.

In August 2004, Wal Mart gift cards were given to all new Culpeper County teachers to help with expenses of furnishing their classrooms.

In November 2004, CSF prepared discount coupon booklets with coupons offered by twenty local businesses. These were sold by students and at a few local stores.

For fall 2005, CSF offered prepackaged school supplies to students who prepaid and received their supplies at school orientation. Profits were returned directly to the schools.

In January 2005, CSF offered red wrist bands for sale. They were imprinted with “I support Culpeper Schools” and were sold through the schools and at several local stores.

In September 2005, the Board changed officers, prepared to consolidate and go forward with vigor. In November, a new CSF web site was planned and launched as www.culpeperschoolsfoundation.com in February 2006. A link from Culpeper County School www.culpeperschools.org website was established.

At the regular School Board Meeting March 13th 2006, at 7 p.m., CSF presented each of the eight schools a check for $250 to use for their School Library.

In March 2006, CSF joined the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce as a non-profit member. The Chamber www.culpepervachamber.com offers a link to the CSF website and CSF website links to the Chamber’s website

At the June 12th 2006 meeting of the School Board, a committee of CSF, Inspiring Excellence in Education, awarded teachers Catherine Simms Stephenson and Cathy Zanella $1000 each for special projects they proposed to further opportunities of our students to pursue excellence.

Mrs. DeJarnette will bring back to her students an improved knowledge of the Spanish language and culture.
